Origin of the Sanjuro 1st, 2nd & 3rd circles

It wasn’t too long after I’d started teaching when I first saw this film (The Yakuza) back in the 80′s.
I think it was something about the gritty nature of this fight and the way the swords emphasised the space between opponents that made me think about the way techniques can, and should be used at varying distances.
